  Notes	"Civil War Veteran Private, Co. A, 8th U.S. Colored Troops Infantry His whereabouts in 1860 remain to be discovered, and it is as yet unknown if he was born free or slave. He was, however, free on April 19, 1861. His obituary in the Franklin Repository claims he was born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, which is almost certainly untrue. He is found in neither the 1850 nor 1860 census, and his compiled military services list his birthplace as shown above, a source directly from John F. Ukkerd himself. By 1863, he stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair, gray eyes, and a yellow complexion, and may well have grown taller. A Civil War veteran, on September 9, 1863, he enlisted in Chambersburg at the overstated age of eighteen as a substitute for Joseph Thompson and mustered into federal service that same day as a private with Co. A, 8th U.S. Colored Troops. Wounded in action at Olustee, Florida, on February 20, 1864, he was admitted to a military hospital at Beaufort, South Carolina. In June 1864, he was detached to the ambulance corps and never returned to active duty with his regiment. He honorably discharged November 16, 1865, at Brownsville, Texas. His compiled military service records spell his surname "Ukkord," and the previously mentioned obituary erroneously claims he enlisted in Philadelphia. He married Eviline J. Helm and fathered Charles Albert (b. 03/23/82). He died at his home reportedly from consumption.∼John Ukkerd, a well known colored resident of this place died at his home on East German Street on Thursday afternoon of consumption, aged about forty three years. He was a native of Huntingdon County and came here while quite young. He enlisted at Philadelphia as a private in Co. A., 8th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops and served for over two years. The regiment was first in Florida and afterwards attached to the Army of the Potomac. It was one of the best regiments in the service, had a fine record and lest men than any other regiment sent out from this state. Ukkerd was wounded at the battle of , and had a good record as a brave soldier. Since the war he has been a porter for the National, Montgomery and other hotels."
