- Born: 1841 in Adams County PA. The son of Edward & Eleanor Ann (Grant) Mathews, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Butler Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair, black eyes, and a mulatto complexion. He married Elizabeth Ann Marse January 1, 1863, in Gettysburg and fathered George (b. 08-25-64, d. 11-25-64), Morris J. (b. @1867), Mary Catherine (b. @1870), Emeline (b. @1872), John (b. @1873), Laura Ella (b. @1877), Benjamin (b. @1879), and Charles (b. @1888). A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3, 1864, assigned to Co. I, 127th U.S. Colored Troops at the rank of corporal, promoted to sergeant August 4, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company October 20, 1865, at Brazos, Texas.
