  Notes	From Findagrave: "Parents: Son of John and M____ (Berry) Stevens, in 1860 he was a laborer possibly living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found with certainty in that census. By 1864, he stood 5' 3" tall and had black hair and black eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Harrisburg and mustered into federal service there September 17, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 41st U.S. Colored Troops. As of July 5, 1865, he was absent in confinement at 2nd Division Headquarters for sleeping at his post at Brazos Santiago, Texas. Court-martialed for a very serious military offense, he pled not guilty, claiming illness, that he had "vomited twice on post." The court found him guilty and issued a sentence of two months at hard labor. Nonetheless, he honorably discharged to date September 30, 1865. By 1870 if not before, he was living in Harrisburg where he became a charter member of Stevens Post No. 520, G.A.R., a post named for another David Stevens. He married Virginia-born Henrietta lnu., who reportedly died ca. 1888. The 1900 census has him living with a wife whose name is unreadable but appears to begin with 'R.' His many newspaper obituaries make no mention of family, and no woman applied for a widow's pension. Contributor: Dennis Brandt (47232334) •"
