Notes |
- Co. H 55th Mass. Born 22 May 1842. Died 18 Nov 1886. "Gone but not forgotten."
Harrisburg Daily Independent, Monday 22 Nov. 1886, page 4:
The funeral of Horace Burton, late a member of Post 520, G.A.R., occurred at 2 o'clock yesterday. A large number of Grand Army men attended the funeral in a body. The interment took place at Lincoln Cemetery. In 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for the John Paxton family in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes. He also reported hostler as his occupation.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one at Readville, Essex County, Massachusetts, June 6, 1863, and mustered into federal service there June 22 as a private with Co. H, 55th Massachusetts Infantry. On October 27, 1863, he was detached to the quartermaster department. In early 1865, the army withheld $3.81 for ordnance and equipage either lost or damaged, an event that occurred to him several times in lesser amounts. He honorably discharged with his company August 29, 1865, at Charleston, South Carolina, at which time he purchased his rifle and associated equipment for $6.00.
He died at his Harrisburg home, where he had been a charter member of Stevens Post No. 520, G.A.R., and "buried with the honors of war." There is an unverified report that he used the alias Goodman Anderson.
