Notes |
- "Jacob Christy, the well known colored citizen, who died in Mercersburg recently, was one of the oldest residents of Franklin County. The "Journal" gives an interesting outline of his career as follows:
Jacob Christy was born in 1805 on the farm now owned by S.S. Myers, a mile southeast of Mercersburg, now known as the McCullough farm. He was born a slave, and owned by James McCurdy. He acquired his freedom by the operation of law, at the age of 28 years.
All his earthly possessions at this time consisted of one suit of clothes. He was industrious, and saving, and although he was paid only seven dollars per month, in a few years he bought the house in which he died, paying therefore two hundred and fifty dollars. Shortly after this, he married Catherine Smith, who had also been born into slavery, belonging to a Mr. Smith who died before she reached her twenty-eighth birthday year and she served the remainder of her slavery days with John Johnston, who owned and occupied the property now owned by John A. Witherspoon.
Jacob and Catherine has five sons, all of whom served in the war of the rebellion, one of whom was killed, two were wounded and two returned home at the end of their service."
(The above was entirely transcribed/added by Wanda Nitterhouse. It is from the 1 March 1901 edition of Public Opinion Weekly, newspaper of Chambersburg, PA. The death date is from same newspaper, 8 Feb 1901 edition.)
According to the 8 Feb. 1901 edition of the Mercersburg Journal, Mr. Christy was "aged 95 yrs, 11, months and two days".... He was the oldest member and communicant of the Presbyterian church, having become a member in January 1833. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters as follows:
John and Samuel A., near Mercersburg; Jacob of Pittsburg; Mrs. Wesley Kunkleton and Mrs. Wm. Young, of Mercersburg."
