  Notes	Martin Welcome's Funeral Martin Welcome, aged 61, died at his home, back of the State Arsenal, Monday morning, of pneumonia. The funeral took place today, services being held in the West Harrisburg mission. The body was taken to the church from the residence of William Brown, on New Fifth street. Interment took place in Lincoln Cemetery. (Harrisburg Telegraph. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 22 Feb 1893, Wed Page 6) "The possible son of Jane Welcomer, he married Mary and fathered Andrew (b. @1860). In 1860, he was a lime burner living with his family in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and dark eyes. He is in the 1860 and 1870 censuses and the 1890 Veterans Schedule as "Mark Welcome." It is not certain if that were a middle name or a nickname. A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of twenty-eight and mustered into federal service either at Carlisle or Chambersburg (both reported) August 14, 1863, as a private with Co. A, 8th U.S. Colored Troops. He then went on a roller coaster ride of promotions and demotions, first to corporal October 5, 1863, to sergeant November 11, reduced to private December 4 following, then reappointed sergeant December 15, reduced to corporal February 3, 1864, and back to sergeant May 1, 1864. Wounded at the battle of Olustee, Florida, on February 20, 1864, he was hospitalized at Beaufort, South Carolina, and returned to duty by June 4, 1864. The army withheld what appears to be $7.75 for transportation and an additional $14.59 for extra clothing, more than a month's pay even for a sergeant. He was again wounded, this time at the battle of Chapins Farm, Virginia, on September 29, 1864, and admitted to Balfour U.S. Hospital at Portsmouth, Virginia. (The nature of the two wounds is not described in his compiled military service records.) Reduced to private to date April 1, 1865, he honorably discharged November 10, 1865, at Brownsville, Texas. All of his military records and pension index identify him with a first name of "Martin." Mary died in 1884, and he married Katherine A. Hawkins September 18, 1890, in Harrisburg.
