  Notes	Civil War: Most likely a sailor that served as Ship's Steward during the Civil War, given his nickname "Fishback." A 5'6" tall Black man named William Logan, age 19 years, enlisted in the US Navy 9 Dec 1862. This William Logan, reported his birthplace as Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and he mustered into service as Officer's Steward on 31 Dec 1862, aboard the St. Lawrence He may have also served with the 43rd USCT or 55th Mass. Race: Black Height: 5' 6" Enlistment Date: 9 Dec 1862 Enlistment Place: Key West Term of Enlistment: 3 Rating: Officer's Steward Muster Date: 31 Dec 1862 Vessel: St. Lawrence Other Service Possibilities: Suggested edit: A search for the regiment in which William Logan served during the Civil War has so far revealed nothing concrete. Two possibilities seem the most likely: Co. E, 43rd U.S. Colored Troops or Co. H, 55th Massachusetts Infantry. If the latter is true, he left a widow named Sarah, who applied for a widow's pension about a year after the subject of this post died. None of his several obituaries mentions the regiment. The pension for the 55th Massachusetts man remains out of reach behind the covid-locked doors of the National Archives, and no pension index was found for the 43rd U.S.C.T. man. We do know that he was a member of Harrisburg's Stevens Post No. 520, G.A.R. and fell ill while marching in a parade to post headquarters. He sat on a stoop and began bleeding from the mouth, dying a reported ten minutes later from what the coroner determined to be a hemorrhage of the lungs. At his death, he was employed by a Mrs. Espey and died at the reported age of "about forty-five years." One of his obituaries mentions the use of the alias "Fishback."
