Notes |
- At the time of his enlistment in the United States Colored Troops, Robert was 20-years-old, and he must have cut a fine figure at 5 ft 8 inches (2 in. above the average man at the time)! He had a "mulatto complexion," black hair, and hazel eyes. His enlistment papers state that he worked as a "servant" before he enlisted.
He mustered into federal service at Poughkeepsie, New York, January 26, 1865* (see below), as a private in company B of the 1st U.S. Colored Troops. The New York Registers of Officers and Enlisted Men, states that Robert served 6 months and that he was discharged on expiration of term with undescribed "other wounds."
"However, his compiled military service records contain only his discharge as he apparently never served active duty. He was discharged by surgeon's certificate per general order to date May 10, 1865, at Hart Island, New York, New York" (FindAGrave Contributor: Dennis Brandt 47232334).***
**(Could he have been a recruiter?)
***According to Robert's obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent, he spent the majority of his adult life, after the Civil War, managing many properties in New York City
After the war, he relocated to Harrisburg and married Maria Chester (one of the sisters of Thomas Morris and David Chester). He died at the age of 42, at the home of his mother-in-law, Jane Marie Morris Chester, from heart disease. His wife and in-laws were his only known survivors.
