  Notes	TWO MAY DIE. Murderous Affray in a House at Jeannette. ADLEY FATALLY HURT. Two Others Wounded by the Desperate Assailant IT IS SAID A PREVIOUS QUARREL Was the Cause Which Led to the Murderous Attack. THE EX-OFFICER TELLS HIS STORY. A shooting affray occurred about 10 o'clock last night at the house of Cora Harris, a colored woman residing at Jeannette, which may result in a double murder. The victims were John H. Adley, formerly a member of the Pittsburgh police force, and Cora Harris. Both are in a very critical condition, and the attending physicians have but faint hopes of their recovery. The news of the shooting was telegraphed to the police officials at city hall late last night, but no particulars were given, and the friends of Adley were greatly exercised in consequence. J. H. Adley was brought to Pittsburgh this morning about 8 o'clock and removed to his boarding-house at No. 48 Wilson street. Dr. Guy McCandless was called to attend the wounded man. The bullet entered between his shoulders and took a downward course. No effort was made to probe for it, as its location made such an operation impossible. It grazed the left lung and lodged in his stomach. An internal hemorrhage has set in and there is no hope for Adley's recovery. The wound was greatly aggravated by his being hauled to this city. Early this morning, while suffering greatly, Adley had not yet seen the man who shot him and had never seen him before. "I had called at the house of Cora Harris on the outskirts of the town and intended remaining there only a short time, as I expected to return to Pittsburgh on the night train. It was about 10 o'clock when the door was pushed open and a man began shooting into the room. Three shots were fired. There were several persons in the house at the time. On hearing the first shot I turned to see who was doing the firing. As I turned I fell to the floor with a bullet wound in my back. I was picked up and carried to another room. Two doctors were called, but they could do nothing. I feel that my time has come, as I do not expect to recover. The course of the bullet was naturally downward, as I was then sitting on a chair in the corner. I was seated nearest the door and was only a few feet from the man who did the shooting. The first intimation I had of trouble was when I heard the shots." Two of the other shots took effect. One hit Cora Harris in the breast, but was turned aside by a corset steel, inflicting only an ugly flesh wound. How badly she is hurt is not known yet, as the doctors have not made a thorough examination to determine whether or not the bullet is in her body. The other shot struck an unknown man in the wrist, entering the bone and passing through and badly shattering the bones. A telegram to the Press from Jeannette says that the man who did the shooting was a Fred Williams, who was well known to Cora Harris. He quarreled with her yesterday and had called at the house with the intention of killing her. He also swore to kill any man he did not find in the house, but, becoming frightened, fled. It is thought that he intended to murder any of the other persons in the room. Early in the evening, while sitting in the room at the Harris house, Williams had drank a pint of whisky. He was surly and said nothing to the others in the house. He left, but was gone only a short time. It is supposed that he got the revolver while he was away. In the confusion that followed the shooting he escaped, as all present turned their attention to the injured people. He is still at large. Adley was one of the best known officers on the police force. He was relieved from duty about three weeks ago because he refused to obey the instructions of Lieut. Scott. He had been out on a beat at Point for twice the length of the usual beats, and he had been allowed to work at it. It was to relieve Lieut. Scott from his beat, and he had to cover it in one hour instead of two. When Lieutenant Scott found out, he refused to let Adley go, and when pressed, Adley resigned. He had been suspended at first, but at the same time handing in his keys to the police he quit. Since then he has been out of employment. Yesterday he went to Jeannette on the 1:30 train to sell some patent items and on his return home he called at the home of Cora Harris, whom he had known in this city. His residence in Jeannette was only a short time, as he expected to return to Pittsburgh on the night train. Adley was on the police force about six years. His beat had always been on the lower avenues. He was one of the most clever detectives and was one of the sharpest characters in the city, and greatly disliked by the criminals, as he was always catching them and bringing them to justice. He is a member of the Grand Army and the colored Odd Fellows. He is married, but separated from his wife some time ago.
