Notes |
- Landrew Cochran, An Ex-Slave, Dies Here, Aged 90 years.
What was doubtless the oldest resident of Duquesne died last Saturday. He was Landrew Cochran, colored, and his death occurred at his home on Kahlor [sic] street, Third ward, where he had resided for four years. Mr. Cochran was born on June 10, 1811, at Winchester, Va., and was consequently almost 90 years old. In his youth he had been a slave and had passed through many of the painful expriences to which his race was heir. He was a pleasant old man and had many friends. The cause of death was hemorrhages of the bowels and bladder and other diseases incidental to advanced years. He was a married man and is survived by a family. The funeral services were conducted Sunday evening at his late home and on Monday the remains were taken to Monongahela, where additional services were held and where the interment took place.
Speaking of Mr. Cochran’s death the Republican of Monongahela, where the deceased had formerly resided, says: “Mr. Cochran was born in Whiteport, Va., May 10, 1811, and was taken to Winchester when 14 years of age. He was a slave and his master’s name was Eli Bell. He remained with him for a number of years, and then made his escape, but was captured and taken back. In the year 1863, just after Sheridan made his famous ride to Winchester, he made his second attempt to gain freedom and was successful. He came to Monongahela the same year, and has been a familiar figure in our neighborhood ever since, having made his home with Capt. Wm. Catlin, but of late years with his son at Duquesne. The deceased was a member of the A.M.E. church from where the funeral took place Monday at 10 o’clock, the interment being in Monongahela cemetery. Mr. Cochran is survived by a wife and five children.” (The Observer, Duquesne, Pa., Friday, Jan 25, 1901, p 2)
