Notes |
- Henry Stuart
Henry Stuart, Esq., one of the best known colored men in this vicinity and for twenty-four years a resident of Harrisburg, died at his residence, No. 108 Cherry avenue, this morning at 2 o'clock. Mr. Stuart was formerly a slave in Maryland and came to Harrisburg in 1864. He was an intelligent man, courteous to all, and had hosts of friends who will learn with sorrow of his untimely death. A friend pays the following high tribute to Mr. Stuart:
Another busy life is ended; another wearied soul at rest. For days afflicted with pains almost too acute to endure, with mind now in the light of knowledge and now in the darkness of unreason, at last he sleeps, and forever. Henry Stuart came down to us from a time when muscle and sinew, clothed in ebony, sowed, but reaped not.
Born at Hagerstown, Md., February 3d, 1837, fate, at his birth, dealt with him less harshly than with most of his brethren, and his way lay in the sunshine of slavery, if such existed, for he had a kind master and a comparatively pleasant home. Still his soul yearned for that freedom which is in the very atmosphere of America. Thus he plunged into the road that Union guns had hewn through secession’s domain, and after days of travel and misery on August 9th, 1864, he reached Harrisburg, which has since been his home. To depict the scenes of that escape would be a repetition of a tale that has oft been told. As his friends prepare to assemble round his bier let them pause on the way to observe that 40, 50, 60 years hence and the tolling bells of government shall in measured notes and slow, announce the death of the last of America's slaves, who shall be laid to rest among the slumbering millions of his brethren. Then shall history in rounded sentences endeavor to soften the severity of the vanished institution. One by one the relicts of slavery fade away.
Wedded for thirty-five years he and his wife have been blessed with nine children, seven of whom survive their father. One of these is James Stuart, at present supervisory principal of school No. 15, of York, Pa. The deceased was exceptionally devoted to his family.
Since 1867 Mr. Stuart has been an Odd Fellow and was one of the leading and most beloved members of Brotherly Love Lodge, No. 896, and P. G. M's. Council, No. 7, both of the G. U. O. of O. F. Gifted beyond question, his carving in wood has attracted wide-spread attention, and "Father Time," an image which he carved and which graces the hall of Brotherly Love Lodge, is a fair sample of his skill. Wesley Union church, South street, had no more constant member than he.
Mr. Stuart was widely known as a genial, honorable gentleman, who by honest dealing made all who knew him his friend. His death is a loss to the community. Funeral from the late residence, 108 Cherry avenue. Interment at Lincoln cemetery. W. H. M.
