  Notes	The son of John & Elizabeth Sweeney, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with black hair and brown eyes. He married Henrietta Collins in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, and fathered Harriet (b. @1862), Emma (b. 1864), Mary (b. 1867), Claris (1867), Rebecca (1870), Lillian (b. 1873), and Mary Melinda (b. 1873). A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Philadelphia July 18, 1863, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. H, 3rd U.S. Colored Troops, but promoted to musician (fifer) either on December 1 or September 1, 1863. (His compiled military service records report both.) He honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865, at Jacksonville, Florida. After the war, he moved his family to Perry County where he was charged with assault. He then fled the area, living in Texas and Ohio and assuming the alias John Sharp. Henrietta's status is unknown, but he allegedly married the much younger Eva Smith in Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio, fathering Anna (b. 08/??/89), Malinda (b. 08/??/93), Stephen (b. 05/??/95), Samuel (b. 05/??/97), and Lucian (b. 02/??/00). He eventually brought her to Lancaster County and re-assumed the surname "Sweeney," but Eva and the children were living apart from him in 1900. That was because Eva had pressed charges against Samuel for felonious assault, accusing him of pulling a gun on her and threatening her life, then picking up an ax and repeating the threat, ultimately striking her in the face with his fist. Thus, in 1900, he was an inmate in Lancaster County Jail serving a 2 1/2 year sentence, although in December 1900, the state pardon board recommended his release. Eva returned to Ohio, but he remained in Lancaster where he died in the county hospital, a member of Benn Post No. 607, G.A.R. On September 16, 1901, Henrietta applied successfully for a widow's pension. Eva applied also as a contest widow but initially failed because they never were legally married. However, she tried again in 1933 and succeeded this time. Typical of that time, his age is a question mark. He is in the 1850 census as an eighteen-year-old, the 1860 census as a twenty-four-year-old, and the 1900 census with a birth date of June 1845. His obituary in the Lancaster Semi-Weekly New Era of March 13, 1901: He died on Sunday at the County hospital. He was buried on Wednesday at four o'clock afternoon from A. C. Rote's undertaking parlors. Internment being made in the Soldier's Lot in Lancaster cemetery. The members of Sergeant Benn Post; G. A.
