  Notes	The son of Maryland-born Lloyd & Pennsylvania-born Lydia (Robinson) Mares, he married Susan Lisburn and fathered Lydia Ann (b. ?, d. 1869). In 1860, he was a carpenter presumably living in Lower Dickinson Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes. His surname was also spelled "Mayers." A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 2, 1864, and mustered into federal service there August 29 as a private with Co. I, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry (80th Pa). He was admitted to Jefferson U.S. Hospital, Jeffersonville, Indiana, on March 25, 1865, where surgeons amputated his left [? - possibly thumb - illegible], although his compiled military service records state no cause for the problem. He was honorably discharged by general order at Louisville, Kentucky, without having received a single pay. Hospital records spell his surname "Morris."
