J. L. PHOENIX DEAD
J. L. Phoenix, colored, died Thursday morning at 1:00 at his home, 605 Congress Street. He was 81 years old, and was born in Maryland. He was married to Miss Marie Thomas, who survives him, at Wyoming Valley, Pa. He is also survived by four children: Archie, who lives in Emporia; William, of St. Joseph, Mo.; and Mrs. Stella Reynolds and Mrs. Carrie Minnis, of Topeka; two brothers, Hezekiah and Aaron Phoenix, and sister, Mrs. Alice Logan, of Wyoming Valley, Pa. He was a member of the African Methodist Church.

The Phoenix funeral of John Luther Phoenix, colored, was held at the home, 605 Congress Street, yesterday at 2:30 o'clock. John Phoenix was born January 9, 1837, at Mercersburg, Pa., and later moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and forty-two years ago to Emporia. John Phoenix served a year in the Civil War and was a later member of the G.A.R. of Emporia and was an active member of the A.M.E. Church. He had been in the blacksmith business in Emporia for the past forty years, until a year ago, when his health and his sight failed. He was much respected and reared a family of five children, four of whom survive him. Rev. E. D. Hughes of the C.M.E. Church, conducted the services in the absence of Rev. T .E. Sanford, and the choir of the A.M.E. Church, consisting of Mrs. Emma Erwin, Miss Alma Erwin, Miss Bertha Miller, Miss Ritchie Williams, Miss Ruby Lucas, Miss Fern Walker, Mrs. Cora Hooker, Miss Clara Armater (sic), Miss Margaret Armeier (sic) and Miss Daisy Rogers finished the music. The pall-bearers were G.A.R. men and were B. F. Mayo, E. M. Woodson, O. D. Lyle, E. Washington, C. Woods and M. Murray. Interment was made in the old soldiers' lot
in Maplewood Cemetery.
The out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Minnis of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Reynolds and children, Ruth and Lawrence; Mr. and Mrs. William Phoenix and son, Earl, of St. Joseph, Mo.
