With the arrest of William Jones last night the police are of the opinion that the mystery in the case of the murdered negro baby that was found on the morning of September 1 on Susquehanna street, at the rear of the People's Ice Company stables, has been cleared up, as the mother of the child has given the department a complete confession.
The day-old baby was found lying in the street early in the morning and was plainly strangled to death with a piece of colored rag. This was the only clue that the police have had to work on during the three weeks Detective Ibach and County Detective Walters have been working on the case.
After an extended investigation it was discovered yesterday morning that Laura Washington, aged 15 years, who resides with her aunt, Mrs. Julia Ann Jones, 343 Muench Street, had given birth to a child some time near the date of the crime. The detective then entered the house and found a pair of curtains that matched exactly the goods that were used to strangle the newborn infant.
The Washington girl immediately confessed to the bearing of the infant and its subsequent disappearance, although she denied all knowledge of its death. In her statement she said that when the child was born in her aunt's house William Jones, the father; William Dixon and the woman were all in the house. She claims that Jones took the child immediately after birth and tore off a piece of the curtains. She did not see just what happened, although she saw the baby kick while in Jones' grasp.
This confession was made in the presence of District Attorney Stroup and Detectives Ibach and Walters late yesterday afternoon in the mayor's office and followed the conflicting stories that were told by Mrs. Jones, William Dixon and Leroy Jones. The girl, however, states that Leroy Jones was not implicated in the case in any way. Mrs. Jones disclaims all knowledge of the affair and says that the Washington girl never was the mother of the child.
Jones eluded arrest all day yesterday until last evening, when he was seen in the "yard" by Coroner Eekinger. Eekinger, who is acquainted with Jones, called him across the street and told him that he had some money to give him, but that the transaction needed a witness. In this manner Jones followed the Coroner to Third and Market streets, where he was turned over to Officer Shlomberg.
The District Attorney is at present arranging the evidence and will have the indictments drawn up within the next few days. An effort will be made to have the case rushed through the session of criminal court which will be held next week. As the case now stands it is probable that William Jones will be the only person who will be held on the murder charge. Less serious charges will be brought against the others implicated in the affair.
