Torn From Family by Slave Block Never Saw Them Again Ex-slave Dies at Almshouse Burial by Former Employers Separated from family and friend many year ago by the cruelty of the auction block. Mrs. Frances Herbert, an old slave who had lost track of her own age died all alone In the world at the Dauphin County Alms House last Sunday night. Mrs. Herbert was born In South Carolina. When very young she and three other little girls were torn from their mother and sold at auction. She never saw any of her relatives again. Developing Into an excellent cook, she was sold in the course of time to several prominent men of the South, having three masters in all. Mrs. Herbert wa married twice. Her first marriage wa the ordinary slave ceremony of "jumpin' over a broom stlck." When her first husband died she was married to Mr. Herbert by a minister. At the time of President Garfield's assassination, Mrs. Herbert wa employed by Dr. Van Ressler, a brother-in-law of the President, of Berkley Spring. West Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert came to this city many year ago. Mrs. Herbert was employed a cook by many prominent Harrisburg families. Several years ago, Mr. Herbert died, and Mrs. Herbert, being too old to work, was forced to go to the poor house. She is being buried by several of her old employers of this city.
